B.Sc. (Nursing) Degree Program

Overview

B.Sc. (Nursing) degree is a broad-based undergraduate Nursing program within an academic framework specially directed to the development of critical thinking skills, competence, and standards required for the practice of professional nursing and midwifery.

The program prepares its graduates to become an exemplary citizen by adhering to a code of ethics and professional conduct at all times in fulfilling personal, social, and professional obligations so as to respond to national aspirations.

Graduate nurses are prepared to work as a care provider, educator, coordinator, advocator, researcher, counselor & administrator.

The Department of Nursing at the American University of St. Vincent aspires to be a Centre of Excellence and innovation in nursing education. We are committed to preparing nursing students for thoughtful and productive lives of leadership and service as generalist nurses and members of the global nursing community. The department spearheads the B.Sc. Nursing Program. Students will learn to incorporate humanistic values and ethics into all areas of nursing, in order to know how to meet the needs of their future patients.

Goals

Ensure that students are well-grounded in Basic Nursing Sciences to equip them with the knowledge and skills that would enable them to assume responsibilities as competent nurses and midwives providing promotive, preventive, curative, and rehabilitative services.
Prepare graduates to become nurses who can make independent decisions in nursing situations, protect the rights of and facilitate individuals and groups in pursuit of health, functions in the hospital, community nursing services, and conduct research studies in the areas of nursing practice.
Ensure that students understand Nursing and Midwifery within the framework of different social, economic, and cultural situations to address the health needs of diverse patients, families, and communities.
Inculcate students of the University with problem-solving, critical thinking, research, and clinical judgment skills for effective translation into clinical practice.
Produce graduates with a strong moral and ethical basis for the practice of professional nursing and midwifery.

Admission Requirements

The admission requirements for the BSc in Nursing at ASU include:

A completed application form.
Scanned copies of your high school results.
Scanned copy of your passport.
Transcripts from any college or university you attended.
Two letters of recommendation.
A personal statement.

Tuition: US$3500 per semester.

Number of Semesters Per Year: 3

Exam Fees: US$90

Application Fee: US$50

Enrollment Fee: US$500

Student Government Fee: US$100 / year

Within one week of a completed application file, including all necessary documents is received; an admissions counselor will schedule an interview to be done either over the telephone or personally at our campus in St Vincent. Applicants are advised that being granted an interview is not a guarantee of acceptance.

The Purpose of the Interview

To evaluate the applicant regarding his or her:

Intellectual and academic ability
Communication skills, both verbal and written
Knowledge of the medical field
Hobbies, special talents, volunteer experience
Personal qualities, character and motivation
Willingness to be a team player
Compassion, empathy and ability to deal with everyday issues
The interview also allows the student to ask pertinent questions and to introduce any special circumstances that should be considered.

Following the Admissions Committee interview, the student will be notified of their admission status within one week. After receipt of the acceptance letter, the student is required to acknowledge their intention by returning the acceptance response form included with their acceptance letter, as well as mail the seat deposit fee to our Admissions Office within one week or by the deadline stated in the acceptance letter. This deposit will be credited towards the first semester tuition fees when the student matriculates. The deposit will not be refunded if the student rescinds his or her acceptance
